Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) es conocido por las coloridas composiciones de símbolos que creó en Alemania antes de la Primera Guerra Mundial y por los expresivos paisajes de su estado natal, Maine, que pintó durante sus últimos años. Más allá de estos dos períodos, su obra fue muy variada, influenciada por los viajes y diversos estilos del modernismo. Hartley pasó la etapa formativa de su carrera en Francia y Alemania, y posteriormente adoptó un estilo de vida itinerante en Norteamérica, sin permanecer nunca más de un año en un sitio determinado. México, Nueva Inglaterra, Nueva York, Nueva Escocia o el suroeste, cada lugar infundió en su obra un carácter distintivo.

"What I have to express is not handled with words. It must 'come' tot the observer. It must carry its influence over the mind of the individual into that region of him which is more than the mind. The pictures must reach inwards into the deeper experiences of the beholder – and mind you they care in no sense religious tracts – there is no story to them or literature – no morals – they are merely artistic expressions of mystical states – these in themselves being my own personal motives as drawn from either special experiences or aggregate ones."
