Robert Mapplethorpe, una mirada Clásica

El fotógrafo estadounidense Robert Mapplethorpe murió hace veinte años, el 9 de marzo de 1989, y su legado ha influido en el lenguaje visual de artistas contemporáneos y asimismo en la apertura de la comunidad gay.

En nuestra sociedad, Robert Mapplethorpe se ha convertido en el icono por excelencia de la fotografía gay. Sus imágenes Homoeróticas aún perturban a muchas personas, por su absoluta falta de concesiones, son imágenes que huyen de cualquier sentimiento de culpa o vergüenza. Además su muerte de SIDA, en 1989, a la edad de 42 dará, por su juventud, un aura simbólica a su vida.

No obstante un estudio desapasionado del artista lo acaba inscribiendo en la gran tradición clásica. Sin duda hay un aspecto manierista en la sensibilidad de Mapplethorpe. Él disfruta con figuras de extraordinaria musculatura, sobre todo en los hombres negros. Fuerza las composiciones adoptando aspectos melodramáticos, a veces hasta el punto de lo kitsch y a menudo extravagantes yuxtaponiendo en blanco y negro. No es difícil, observando las imágenes de Mapplethorpe, descubrir la sombra de Rafael o Canova.

La mirada de Mapplethorpe continúa vigente entre los artistas actuales, como el español Alberto García-Alix, los cubanos René Peña y Cirenaica Moreira, las italianas Paoli Ardizzoni & Monica de Pascalis, los estadounidenses Andrés Serrano y Nan Goldin, el francés Antoine D'Agata y el japonés Nobuyoshi Araki, entre otros.
